If you are new to woodworking or have never used the Kreg Jig to build furniture, you MUST get one! This tool makes building furniture SUPER easy; in fact I would likely not have attempted making furniture or frames out of wood had I not purchased this tool. When you first purchase this tool, it is a bit confusing trying to figure out how to use it (at least it was for me, I assume others will encounter the same issue!). So I thought it would be helpful to create a post explaining how to use the Kreg Jig. I purchased the R3 model, which is one of the most basic models, but it is also affordable and works well. The R3 model can be purchased on Amazon (link below) or at Home Depot or Lowes.
My K3 model came in a small case, like this:
The case contains the Kreg Jig, a drill bit, a driver bit, a hex key, and a depth collar. The kit also came with pocket hole screws (about 50) and about 10 pocket hole dowels:
The first step, is to set the depth of the hole you will be drilling on the Kreg Jig. Remove the Jig from the case, and using your fingers, squeeze the sides of the grey slider until the depth you want is lined up with the arrows, like this:
Once you have the depth set on the jig, you will need to put the depth collar onto the drill bit, set it to the correct depth, and tighten it using the hex key:
Next you will need to position the Kreg Jig on the piece of wood you will be drilling into.
Next, use a clamp to secure the Kreg Jig to your workbench. The Kreg clamp works perfectly for this as it fits perfectly into the top of the Jig, but any clamp will work:
Next, attach the drill bit with the depth collar to the drill:
Place the drill bit into the drill guide on the Kreg Jig and begin drilling the hole:
Continue drilling until the depth collar is flush against the Kreg Jig:
Remove the drill bit from the Jig:
Remove the clamp on the Kreg Jig and remove it from the board. A pocket hole will now be present:
Next, remove the drill bit from the drill and replace it with the Kreg driver bit. The driver bit has a specific shape that works with the Kreg pocket hold screws:
Next clamp the board you will be attaching to the board that you drilled the pocket hole in. Then drill the Kreg pocket hole screw into the hole:
Once the screw is in all the way, your boards will be attached and there will be no visible screw!
