As part of my DIY Family Command Center, I built a DIY mail/paper organizer as a place to keep my daughter’s weekly school folder and mail.
I promised I’d post plans to build the DIY Mail Sorter, so here they are! :-) First I did some research to get ideas, and then I found this post from Build Basic. I modified her plans to build a mail sorter with only two slots and to be 16″ wide so it fit into my DIY Family Command Center plans.
- 1/4″ plywood board
- 1 – 1 x 3 x 6 board
- 1 – 1 x 2 x 6 board
- 8 ft of 1/4″ x 2″ trim board
- Finish nails (and Ryobi Airstrike Nailer or a hammer)
- wood glue
- wood stain
- 1 – 1/4″ plywood boards cut to 16″ x 23.5″
- 2 – 1/4″ plywood boards cut to 8″ x 12.5″
- 4 – 1 x 3 boards @ 8″ each
- 2 – 1 x 2 boards @ 11″ each
- 4 – 1/4″ x 2″ boards @ 12.5″ each (with ends mitered to 45 degrees)
- 4 – 1/4″ x 2″ boards @ 8″ each (with ends mitered to 45 degrees)
I used a large spare piece of 1/4″ plywood that we already had, but you can purchase a piece of plywood at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
I then measured and marked the plywood to mark a 16″ x 23.5″ rectangle:
I then cut the plywood using my table saw. Next, I cut four 1 x 3 boards to 8″ in length each on the miter saw. I then marked a spot a 1″ in from the edge on one end and then drew a line from the corner on the same side of the board, but at the opposite end up to the line marked 1″ from the edge. I then cut along the line on my miter saw (I set my saw to cut at a 10 degree angle and that seemed to cut along the line I had drawn perfectly. I did this on all four 1 x 3 boards.
I also cut two 1 x 2 boards to 11″ in length each. Using wood glue and my Ryobi Airstrike Nailer, I attached the two 1×3 boards to the ends of the 1×2 boards, with the narrower end of the 1×3 attaching to the 1×2:
Next, cut the two 1/4″ plywood boards at 8″ x 12.5″ each. Attach to the front of the two assembled 1×3 and 1×2 frames using wood glue and finish nails:
Next, using wood glue and finish nails, attach each of the mail sorter “pockets” to the 16×23.5 plywood boards, evenly spacing them on the board. Shoot the nails from the rear of the large plywood board.
Next, cut the 1/4″x2″ trim boards on the miter saw. Cut four boards at 8″ each, with each end mitered to 45 degrees and cut four boards to 12.5″ with each end mitered to 45″. Then attach to the front of the “pockets” using wood glue and finish nails.
Lastly, fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Then sand and stain. Done! Quick and easy project and now you can hang it on your wall as a solo mail sorter, or as party of a family command center, as I did. In this pic, the mail sorter is at the bottom right of my command center.
