It may seem weird to be making DIY icicles in March, but with the popularity of Frozen and Frozen birthday parties, I guess it’s not so odd anymore to be making what normally would be Christmas decorations all throughout the year! 🙂 Like almost every other kid in the universe, my daughter wants a Frozen theme for her birthday party this year. So, I have been searching Pinterest and my brain for inexpensive decorations to turn our yard into a winter wonderland in April (although living in California, even if it were December, I’d still need to make my own winter wonderland decor as we don’t get snow here!). I did purchase some felt icicles off Amazon that I will be using to put on the food table, but I figured there must be a cheaper way to make icicles so I can have them all over the backyard and not have to pay a fortune. I was at the dollar store and saw the foam board there and decided that would be PERFECT to create fake icicles! I purchased several foam boards for a dollar each (MUCH cheaper than Hobby Lobby – they charge $2.50 per foam board!) This also gives me a chance to use the hot knife I bought last year and have not used yet! Yay!
I highly recommend using a hot knife if you will be cutting foam board as it makes it SUPER easy! It is pretty much just a razor blade that gets hot, and it just glides right through the foam with only one cut. If you don’t have a hot knife, a regular exacto knife will work as well. Here is the hot knife I used:
The smaller portion of the board that I cut out will mimic icicles hanging from the roof, the larger bottom half of the cut board I am going to put on the ground to mimic frozen icicles sticking up, like this:
Once I had cut out all my icicles, I used a spray adhesive to add white crystal glitter to each board so it looks like snow and ice. The spray adhesive I used was 3M Super 77 that I purchased at Home Depot and the glitter I chose was Treehouse Crystal Glitter purchased at Hobby Lobby:
First, I sprayed adhesive onto the foam board icicles, and then I sprinkled the glitter over the foam board. They came out very sparkly and glistening! On the day of the party, I will hang them from our pool fence, from my daughter’s play structure, and from the eaves of our house. I of course will post all the pics from the party after we have it, but these are just a sneak preview of some of the decorations! Here are some more pics of the icicles:
This was a quick and easy project that really added some “winter” to our Frozen party!
